Stephen Ministry

SBUMC is enrolled in the Stephen Series, a complete system of training and organizing lay persons for caring munistry in and around their congregations. Stephen Ministry is a program that equips lay persons to provide distinctively Christian one-to-one care to those who are experiencing all kinds of life needs and circumstances, both in our congregation and community. Our Stephen Ministers work together with our pastors to reach more people with Christian care than pastors can reach by themselves.

The Stephen Ministry at SBUMC brings care to all in need. This confidential, Christian caregiving is a vital part of the total healing ministry of Christ’s body, the Church. Stephen Ministers are trained to aid the care receivers to more effectively deal with their own situations and to grow. As a care receiver you may:

  • develop stronger ties with a community of Christians
  • grasp the role of suffering in life
  • accept forgiveness and grace from God and others
  • give forgiveness and love
  • increase your level of trust
  • start a relationship with God
  • renew your relationship with God
  • learn positive attitudes and expectations
  • develop a foundation for holistic stability in your life
  • nurture a healthier ego and a realistic, self-image
  • build whole and complete relationships

God alone is the one who takes broken individuals and makes them whole. For information about Stephen Ministry, call the church office at 777-0116 or Debra Tupper at 773-2971. You may also approach any Stephen Minister as all information is confidential.

CRISIS: An emotionally charged time of instability during which a crucial change occurs. The Chinese word for crisis is a combination of two characters: one for “danger,” the other for “opportunity.” This drives home the fact that every crisis, though it involves impending danger, also offers opportunities for personal or spiritual growth. Stephen Ministers are trained to walk with you through the dangers of your crisis and to help you find the opportunities God has in store for you.
